In the high plains desert of New Mexico, water is not only precious, it is sacred — water is Life.
Among the Navajo, water is represented by Tonenili, a yei or god who is recognized in rivers and snow, ponds, springs and especially rain.
When I saw the magnificent summer storm that resulted in my painting Tonenili Walks, I knew I had to accept the challenge of putting it on canvas. I worked to express, honor, and acknowledge the invaluable gift of water in the desert.
